The Roots of Croatia (continued)

Another characteristic of Croatians was their deep love of mother. The Croatian mother was unique; she was the source of all life, not the ground and the soil, but rather it was the woman who walked on the ground and toiled in the soil who was the source of all life. It was the mother who brought life into the family. The Croatian mother was the source of human life, and the Blessed Mother was the source of everlasting life through her son, Jesus Christ. These themes were noted in the new immigrants.

There is a beautiful song entitled Croatian Mother to Her Children in America from the year 1926. Translated it says:

Stay well my dear children who are wasting your lives
That the sweat on your tender face who can feed your orphans at home.
Stay well all Croatian sons and daughters who are there crushing your energies.
Stay well you who are driven out from your doorsteps from your homes by affliction.
May the Good Lord reward your torment, and bless your calloused hands with the blessing of every drop of sweat from your face.
May every desire of your heart be fulfilled.
May happiness and joy be always with you, oh Croatian, dearest children of mine!
